Ezra Johnson - Artist Statement

This is a work examining the complexity of humanity through a study in simplification. The use of hard edges and plane changes make it simpler, but it appears to have many parts, referencing the fact that every human being has a complicated mix of experiences, emotions, and knowledge within them. I find that imagining people as complicated guides every interaction that I have and helps inform my reactions to what they do. Understanding that many times there may be a deeper issue behind what someone does helps you react with compassion rather than frustration. This attitude helps me maintain a calm demeanor and deflect some of the things that happen to me that would otherwise hurt me, as if I was encased in a diamond shell. I am not invincible however, as evidenced by the shattering area at the neck.
